The Ohio State women’s gymnastics team suffered a disappointing loss at the hands of Towson State University this weekend, but head coach Larry Cox remains optimistic.’I’m obviously upset by our performance, but at the same time I’m taking it to be a learning experience,’ Cox said.TSU won the meet 192.700-187.375. TSU also won three out of the four events on the day, with the only OSU team victory coming on the balance beam, where OSU outscored TSU 47.725-47.475.Cox was surprised by the Buckeye’s team score.’I really didn’t expect to score this low all year,’ Cox said. ‘We should consistently be scoring in the 192 to 194 range.’Four girls fell during the their floor routines, and every girl but one missed on their bar performance, Cox said.Like Cox, OSU senior Koyuki Oka is also trying to be optimistic about the team’s performance. ‘We had our problems against TSU,’ Oka said. ‘But we’re just glad it happened early in the season. I think we learned from the mistakes we made out there.’The lone individual victory by a Buckeye came on the vault, where sophomore Susan Eckman won the event with a season-high score of 9.95.Oka was the only Buckeye to place in the top four in two individual events. She tied for second on the uneven bars with a score of 9.7 and was fourth on the beam with a 9.7. ‘The bars is my strongest event,’ Oka said. ‘And I’m happy that I’m getting consistent too.’Only four girls between TSU and OSU competed in the all-around. Buckeye Mindi Farmer came in third with a score of 37.775, behind TSU’s Erin Shanley’s score of 39.175.’I struggled out there,’ Farmer said. ‘I tried to perform a difficult series to gain some experience, and I fell. But the important thing is that I learned from my mistakes.’ As for her team’s performance, Farmer stressed the positives.’We didn’t give up all day,’ Farmer said. ‘We worked through our misses.’Before the meet, OSU was ranked 22nd in the nation. ‘I’m not concerned with our ranking this early in the season, because right now there are thirty to forty teams in the country that are matched pretty tightly,’ Cox said. The lady Buckeyes next meet is Feb. 1 in Dekalb, Ill. against Northern Illinois.
