After 25 years as a student group at Ohio State, Bisexual, Gay and Lesbian Alliance (B-GALA), is going back to its roots. An anniversary celebration is planned for Saturday, beginning at 9 p.m. at the Hillel Foundation, 46 East 16th Ave., admission is $2 at the door.’The history of B-GALA at OSU is the history of the gay civil rights movement,’ said Joshua Black, a junior, majoring in Spanish and political science and president of the alliance. The event is part of OSU’s Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Awareness Week. Founded in the fall of 1971, the organization was originally denied funding ‘because the administration deemed their materials obscene,’ Black said.’We welcome participants to campus, and wish them well for a successful event,’ said William Napier, executive assistant to OSU President E. Gordon Gee.A display of the group’s memorabilia and archives will be featured at the event.’We’ve had some spectacular successes during our history,’ Black said. ‘For example, B-GALA lobbied successfully to have homophobia included in the university’s anti-discrimination policy.’Another highlight was the creation of OSU’s Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Student Services office in 1990.The alliance party is also a benefit for Kaleidoscope, a local gay youth support group.’As we look back on our history, it’s also a great time to look forward,’ Black said. ‘We need to help the next generation.’
