The Ohio Union has latched onto a worldwide digital trend: It is now on Twitter.

According the Ohio Union’s Web site, students can use Twitter, the growing social networking site, to get news on the building’s construction progress and updates on other union activities and news.

Kurt Foriska, associate director of the Ohio Union, said Twitter is a good way for students to get a quick update on what’s going on.

“We do have a lot of information on our Web site,” he said. “We’re digesting it for the students so it’s just snippets of what’s going on so it makes it a little bit easier.”

Jen Murphy, assistant director of marketing for the union, said in an e-mail that Twitter also benefits the union because it helps stay in contact with people other than students.

“We have students, alumni and people in the community following us who want to know more about the new building,” she said. “We like being able to keep them updated on the progress, especially if we are able to do so weekly.”

She said Twitter is also a way the union can get their news and updates out quickly.

The union decided to start tweeting because it tries to keep up with the communication that students are using, and Twitter was the most relevant, Foriska said.

Foriska said that student response so far has been good, with five to 10 new followers every day. He said that students seem to like the fact that the union tries to word its updates as if it is actually the building talking.

The union will not stop tweeting once the building project is finished, Foriska said.

There will be plenty more news and events once the new union opens that will benefit students, he said.
