Quartet comes to Southern Theatre

The Columbus Chamber Music Society welcomes the Orion String Quartet at 8 p.m. on Saturday to the Southern Theater, 21 E. Main St., as the final offering in the 2001-2002 season of the Columbus Chamber Music Society. The Orion String Quartet is the Quartet-in-Residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and New York’s Mannes College of Music. The concert will include pieces by Henry Purcell, Ludwig van Beethoven, Maurice Ravel and Per NørgÃ¥rd. Tickets are available through TicketMaster and the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts and range from $20-30. Student tickets are half price.

Magpie singers to tour local churches

The Magpie Consort of singers and musicians will be holding three concerts this weekend. Performers include Ron and Janice Cook of the Early Interval; Christine Fraser Ramsey and other Columbus Harpists; and Chalmers Coe, Minister Emeritus of First Congregational Church. The concerts, to be held at area churches, will feature music and poems centering around the theme of Heaven. The 90-minute concert has four sections entitled “Heaven above”, “Heaven on earth”, “Longing for Heaven”, and “At Heaven’s gate.” Admission is free, but collections are welcome. The group will perform at 8 p.m. on Friday at First Congregational Church, 444 E. Broad St.; at 8 p.m on Saturday at St. James’ Episcopal Church, 3400 Calumet St.; and at 3 p.m. on Sunday at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, 7121 Muirfield Dr.

Denison University hosts playwright

The Premiere Performance of “Perdita Garcia” by Caridad Svich will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the Ace Morgan Theatre at Denison University. “Torch,” a one-woman play written and performed by Svich, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Burke Hall Theatre. Admission for all performances is free.

OSU students showcase dance talent

Three students from the Ohio State Department of Dance will present “Tending Surfaces” at 8 p.m Thursday through Saturday in Sullivant Hall Theatre. The students, Brieanne Billman, Cassie Meador and Kristin Horrigan, have created dance works that address specific issues of humanity, community and environment. A post-performance discussion will follow Friday night’s performance. Tickets are $5 at the door.

Vets to host annual spring music fest

“Bravvo,” the 60th annual spring musical revue staged by Vaud-Villities, will be performed at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday and at 2:30 and 8 p.m. Saturday at Veterans Memorial, 300 W. Broad St. Senior Night is at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow. Tickets range from $5-25.

Pianist to perform pieces at Weigel

Pianist Steven Herbert Smith will be performing at 8 p.m. tomorrow at Weigel Auditorium. Musical pieces to be performed include Alexandra Pierce’s “Rings of Saturn,” William Bolcom’s “Butterflies,” and Antoine Tisné’s “Boréal.” Tickets are available at the door and range from $5-12. Admission is free for OSU students with I.D.
