New apartments near campus may be available to Ohio State students by the summer months, but space will be limited.Construction on an apartment complex located at 43 E. 14th Ave. is almost finished, said Carl Miller, the owner of the building.”I’m making great progress on the building,” Miller said. “I’m hoping to have most of the exterior work done by May 1, but from there it’s up to the city inspectors. I can’t continue with my work without their approval.”The front half of the building burned down on Jan. 10, 1996. According to city fire inspectors, the fire was caused by a vagrant who made his was way into the building. It has taken Miller two years to begin work on the damaged building.”It’s been a long hard battle,” Miller said. “I’ve gotten problems from the city, the historical society and Campus Partners. For the past two years they’ve been suggesting something other than apartments.”Chris Worthy, a junior majoring in CIS, has been in the hunt for an apartment and has been fairly unsuccessful.”If you start looking for an apartment too late, it becomes difficult to find a place you will be comfortable,” he said. “New apartments would help me and all the students in my situation.”The complex, when complete, will have some two to three bedroom apartments but the top section will be a townhouse, Miller said. Miller doesn’t know how much the new apartments will be rented for, but he is trying to offer students a deal.”I was advised to rent the space for approximately $650, but I think the price is a bit steep,” Miller said. “I don’t want to charge too much because students won’t stay.”If the tentative price of $650 is too high for your wallet, the complex offers smaller apartments in the rear. The back section of the building is different from the front because of fire codes and a number of safety regulations. Those apartments, which were not damaged by the fire, remained open during the renovation. They contain one room, and offer students a full kitchen and personal bathroom. The cost of the small apartments are $310 a month, but Miller said the price will drop during the summer months.
