The last time indie-rock Superchunk played the Newport Music Hall was quite memorable, according to Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster.Three years ago, Wurster, vocalist Mac McCaughan, guitarist Jim Wilbur and bassist Laura Ballance were in the middle of their show when a man jumped onstage and attempted to kiss Ballance, Wurster said.”He wouldn’t leave, and so finally, I stopped playing and threw a drumstick at him,” he said. “It actually hit him, and I just saw him falling backwards into the crowd holding the drumstick, while looking at me and kind of saying, ‘Why?'”Superchunk, along with Guided By Voices and Beatnik Filmstars, will return to the Newport tonight in support of their new album, “Indoor Living.”Compared with previous records, “Indoor Living” contains more keyboards, Wurster said.”We had more time to work on it, so we were able to expand it with different instruments that we normally wouldn’t have had time to try out,” he said. The video for the first single, “Watery Hands,” features comedians Janeane Garafolo of “The Truth About Cats and Dogs” and “The Matchmaker” and David Cross of HBO’s “Mr. Show.””They (Garafalo and Cross) were fans of ours, and we were fans of theirs also,” Wurster said.”Indoor Living” was released on Merge Records, the label founded by Ballance and McCaughan in 1989, when the band was still called Chunk, a name that originated with drummer Chuck Garrison, who was a member through the first two albums.”He was listed in the phone book as Chunk Garrison, so the band just became know as Chunk,” Wurster said. The band members changed the name to Superchunk in 1990 after receiving a notice from another band called Chunk. The explosion of “super” bands, such as Superdrag, Supersuckers and Supergrass to name a few, frustrates Superchunk, because of the confusion created, Wurster said.”Every year, you’ll see a new band with ‘super’ in their name,” he said, “and it’s like, ‘Please, try for some originality.'”
