Damon Stringer won’t take the court again as a member of the Ohio State men’s basketball team.Stringer met with coach Jim O’Brien and Athletics Director Andy Geiger over the weekend and it was decided Stringer will no longer play for OSU. “After meeting with Damon and his family, and Director of Athletics Andy Geiger it was mutually agreed upon that it would be in the best interests of Damon and the Ohio State University basketball program if he leaves the team,” said O’Brien in a statement released by the athletics department.Damon’s exit from the team comes on the heels of an incident that occurred April 26.Stringer was charged with assault after he was involved in an altercation following a fender bender.According to a report by the Columbus Division of Police, Stringer kicked Daniel Schneider, 25, in the face and ribs after becoming angry when Schneider backed into Stringer’s car in the parking lot of Schneider’s apartment complex.Stringer did $3,971 worth of damage to Schneider’s 1990 Acura, according to Schneider. He kicked in the door, dented the hood and rear bumper and smashed the sunroof.News of Stringer’s departure hit teammates hard. Sophomore center Ken Johnson said he will miss Stringer.”I feel bad about the situation. Damon will still be my friend, but we have to move on. This is OSU basketball, it’s a business,” Johnson said. “I don’t feel good about him leaving, we were counting on him a lot. Unfortunately this had to happen.”Freshman forward Shamar Herron will also miss having Stringer on the team.”It’s a definite loss to the team, we’re going to miss him a lot,” Herron said. “I think the situation got blown out of proportion. Some non-athletes have a grudge against athletes and they blow things out of proportion. “No one ever emphasizes the positives, it’s all negative for some people,” Herron said.Despite repeated attempts O’Brien, Geiger and Stringer were unavailable for comment.Stringer will be arraigned May 13. If convicted, he could face up to 10 months in jail, and a $2,000 fine.Stringer was an offensive force for the Buckeyes. During the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons he led the team in scoring, averaging 11.3 and 15.1 points per game respectively.”Damon is a great kid, I’ll always love him, teammate or not,” Herron said. “I’ll miss him.”
