In spite of running some of their best times of the season and possessing the home course advantage, the men’s and women’s cross country team finished a disappointing 7th and 10th place respectively in the Big Ten Championships held on OSU’s Scarlet and Gray Golf Course Saturday.”In each competition this season the team had gotten better and better,” OSU head coach Jack Warner said. “I had hoped being on the home course would have helped more.”First year runner Abieda Benjamin described this season’s championships as being like nothing she’d seen all year. “This competition was intense,” Benjamin said. “The team support and the fans were outstanding.”The day however seemed to be reserved for the men and women of Michigan and Wisconsin. The Lady Badgers took home their third consecutive Big Ten title with a score of 25 points (the second best score in Big Ten history) after claiming six of the top ten finishers.”We have an extremely balanced team,” Wisconsin head coach Peter Tegen said. “No one person is outstanding, but together they are good, and it showed today.”Wisconsin completely dominated the five kilometer race until the 3,500-meter mark when Michigan’s Katie McGregor took control and never looked back. McGregor would finish first with a time of 17-minutes, 14.7 seconds followed by teammate Elizabeth Kampfe.”I think our team stepped up today,” McGregor said. “I am pleased with the way I ran, but I wish we could have taken the team title home.”The men’s race of 8,000-meters was much more even handed with three different teams claiming the top three individual marks. The men ran in a tight pack until the 2,000-meter mark where Michigan’s senior runner Kevin Sullivan proved to be a cut above the rest with a strong history-making first-place finish. With a time of 23:42.7, Sullivan became one of the few people in Big Ten history to take home four individual championship victories-his reign interrupted only by one red-shirt season. “I am honored to be considered in such an elite class of runners, but I am most happy with the team’s success today,” Sullivan said. With the conclusion of this season’s conference action, the Buckeyes now look forward to leaving their mark at the NCAA District Championships later this month.
