The 7-5 Crew will be making their first trip to Windy City tomorrow to take on the expansion Chicago Fire at 8 p.m. in Soldier Field. The 6-5 Fire are literally on fire. They have won their last four matches, including handing the Los Angeles Galaxy their only two losses of the season. Chicago’s defense is the tightest in the league. In 11 games they have only given up 13 goals, an average of 1.18 per game.Their defense will receive an extra boost tomorrow when Fire defender/midfielder, Diego Gutierrez, who has been out since October 13, 1996 with a knee injury, will return to the lineup.”He’ll give them a little bit of depth on the left side, but his injury was pretty serious so I don’t think that he will be a deciding factor in the game,” Crew coach Tom Fitzgerald said. Fire midfielder and team captain Peter Nowak was named the Major League Soccer player of the month for May by leading the Fire to a 4-1 record. Nowak tallied three goals and four assists during the month. Two of the three Nowak goals in May came in the Fire’s 2-1 victory over the Galaxy May 20, which broke the Galaxy’s record 15-game winning streak.”Nowak is very busy, creative and quick, we’ll definitely have to keep an eye on him,” Fitzgerald said. MLS player of the week honors were awarded to Crew forward Stern John for the second time this season. John earned the award by scoring his second hat trick of the season in Saturday’s 4-1 Crew victory over the San Jose Clash in Ohio Stadium. Rookie Crew forward Jeff Cunningham is also coming into the match with some net experience as well. Since being given a starting spot he has scored three goals in four starts. “Jeff is gaining confidence every game,” Fitzgerald said. “He really plays well with Stern John.”The Crew, with 21 points, can pull within a point of the Eastern Conference-leading D.C. United with a victory tomorrow and a United loss in their match against San Jose Sunday. The Fire can move past the Dallas Burn into second place in the Western Conference with a victory. Soldier Field is averaging 24,510 fans per game, but Fitzgerald does not see this as something to worry about. “The big crowds are great for our guys,” Fitzgerald said. “Our guys feed off of the energy.” In tomorrow’s match four Polish National Team players will be on the field. The Fire’s Nowak, Roman Kosecki and Jerzy Podbrozny and the Crew’s midfielder Robert Warzycha have all played together on the Polish National Team. Ricardo Iribarren will return to the line-up as the sweeper in tomorrow’s match, allowing Ansil Elcock to move back to his defensive midfield position. Crew keeper Mark Dougherty will be attempting to remain the MLS all-time win leader by repeating his performance in last week’s match. “It’s his job to keep the ball out of the net when we’re not playing well and last week he did a brilliant job,” Fitzgerald said. “He won the game for us.”
