Forty-five minutes prior to Mass, the altar of the St. Thomas More Catholic Newman Center filled with men and women, old and young, preparing for their roles in the evening service.”Easter is the most special week and the busiest week of the year,” said Ceci Gray, pastoral associate for the campus ministry.”We have been preparing for this week, Holy Week, for 40 days now, ever since Lent.”According to Gray, the week before Easter includes many extra activities at the Newman Center.”People can come in and have their Easter meals blessed, we have confession all week, and on Friday and Saturday, we do the stations of the cross,” Gray said. Participating in the stations of the cross includes kneeling down to several pictures of Jesus carrying the cross throughout the church, and saying a different prayer to each one.Saturday evening, the Newman Center holds its Easter vigil Mass. “The service lasts for over two hours and is completely packed,” Gray said. “People don’t mind though, because it is such a wonderful service with beautiful music.”Jason Hanson, a member of the Newman Center, believes Easter is time for family and tradition.”The Easter tradition in my family consists of a big meal, a lot of prayer, celebrating Mass and visiting relatives,” Hanson said.”Easter is such a special time because everything is new again. We all get a second chance at life because Jesus resurrected from the dead,” he said.Angela Morna, a junior form Columbus, said Easter is her favorite holiday. “I enjoy Easter so much because I come to church with my family and then we spend the entire day relaxing and talking.”
