Ever been to Hookahville, the weekend-long festival of Ekoostik Hookah playing mad tunes? If you’re a fan of Ekoostik Hookah and haven’t been able to make it to the weekend-long party, you can celebrate the release of their fourth CD Friday and Saturday night at the Newport. The CD, “Where The Fields Grow Green,” is the first release to be done with the current members of the band. Everyone takes turns singing – including the audience.Dave Katz plays acoustic guitar and piano and shares the songwriting and lead vocals with Ed McGee who plays rhythm guitar. Cliff Starbuck plays the bass guitar and banjo. Steve Sweney jams on lead guitar while Eric Lanese bangs away at the drums. The current lineup of Ekoostik Hookah has been playing together since September 1996. Although the band has been around since March of 1991, the current members feel “Where The Fields Grow Green” demonstrates better sound and excellent chemistry between them. Tondra Van Allen, a fan of Ekoostik Hookah since 1991, said the band puts on a great live performance where people go to party, dance, and enjoy live music.”It’s hard to categorize the type of music because they play a lot of different types,” Van Allen said. “They can go from bluegrass to the banjo.””Where The Fields Grow Green” is a definite example of that. The first track, “Hookahville,” describes Hookahville and why people should go there. To acoustic and bass guitar accompaniment, Katz sings about a place for relaxation where music is always filling the air and that all good people gather there.”Red Light Boogie” adds a new twist to the mix with background voices and noise that make it sound like a hip-hop tune will jump out. The song describes Sweney perfectly, “red hair and a wild beard.” Everyone harmonizes “red light, red light” followed by a deep voice saying “boogie all night.” New Orleans fills the room with blues and funk. Everyone jams on this track and all there is left to do is dance. The guys are great fun, their energy soars. The disc brings happiness and excitement. It is a must to celebrate with this group Friday and Saturday, 9:30 p.m. at the Newport.
