There comes a time when you stop thinking of yourself and think of others in need. The Phi Kappa Psi fraternity hosted its third Christmas party for disadvantaged children in the community Wednesday night. The Delta Delta Delta sorority also sponsored the event.”This event was started to encourage interaction between charitable groups instead of just presenting a donation check,” said Matt Le Roy, a senior majoring in landscape architecture and member of Phi Kappa Psi.Each child was assigned two fraternity members and two members from Tri-Delt. The four chipped in on a gift for the child. The students and the children ate a spaghetti dinner, and afterwards Santa Claus presented the youngsters with the gifts.”I have always wanted to do this for children.” said Jeff Mathewson, a junior majoring in agronomy and a Phi Kappa Psi member. Matthewson played Santa Claus for the event. “I think I fit the profile of Santa Claus,” he said.About 40 kids, aged seven to 12, attended the event from The St. Stephens Community House, a local group that provides after-school programs for Columbus’ low-income children.”Most of these children are single parent, low income and multi-sibling children,” said Sheila Thomas, coordinator of the St. Stephens Community House. “We try to keep these children off the streets with tutoring and field trips.”The children were excited about the idea of getting presents and seeing Santa Claus. Tatiana Brock, 10, said, “I am happy and thankful for the presents and for them inviting us.”Another child, Sharika Jeter, 12, said, “This is kinda like a field trip but this is much more exciting.”This shows that fraternities and sororities do get a bad rap for just partying, said Le Roy. “We do help people year round,” he said.
