Goal charts and Big Ten standings are posted in the locker room of the Ohio State women’s basketball team, who only have three opportunities left to reach one of those goals – an upper division-standing in the conference. The Lady Buckeyes (13-9, 6-7), coming off a two-game losing streak, will rematch no. 9-ranked Illinois (16-6, 10-2) tonight at 8:30 p.m. in Huff Hall.”Illinois is one of the teams that, as a Big Ten coach, I hope they go really far,” OSU coach Beth Burns said. “I think because of the team they have, where they have a lot of different kind of weapons on their team, they can go deep in the NCAA tournament.” After last weekend, OSU dropped to eigth place in the conference, falling to Northwestern, 76-60, and Michigan State, which sneaked by the Buckeyes 74-72.The Illini topped the Lady Buckeyes by 24 points on Jan. 6 in St. John Arena, 81-57. The Lady Buckeyes are 5-6 on the road, and have lost their last three away games.”No matter where you are you should play like you can play, and I think we have a problem getting really pumped up for away games,” OSU forward Michaela Moua said. The Lady Buckeyes bench was shortened that game, losing starting forward – and second-leading scorer in the Big Ten – Marrita Porter, who is averaging 20.3 points per game. Porter had to sit the bench due to an academic suspension, which was appealed.”Thirty minutes before the game we found out Marrita couldn’t play, it interrupted getting ready for the game and I think that was a big factor,” Moua said. “She is a big factor on the team, but you can’t use that as an excuse. We had a bad performance all around.”The Illini’s top guns are forwards Ashley Berggren, Alicia Sheeler and Tauja Catchings. Berggren is the leading scorer, averaging 17 points per game. “I have heard great things about her (Berggren), and she is the player of the year in the conference,” Burns said.Sheeler is averaging 12.9 points per game and is the team’s best rebounder, collecting 8.0 rebounds a match. Catchings is pitching in 11.5 points per game and is the leader in assists and steals for the Illini. The Illini may out-size the Lady Buckeyes, Moua said.”They’re a bunch of big girls . . . it will be interesting under the basket, and I know that I’m going to get banged-up,” she said. The Illini’s offense heads the conference with 79.9 points per game. The Lady Buckeyes will be led offensively by forward Larecha Jones, who racked up her sixth double-double this season against Michigan State, tallying 29 points and 10 rebounds. Porter tossed in 22 points that game along with guard Jamie Lewis who reached her third double-double with 12 points and a career-high-tying 11 assists. “I know we are definitely a quicker team than them,” Moua said. “We just have to stop their big girls.”The Lady Buckeyes next match-up will be against Iowa Feb. 20 in St. John Arena at 7 p.m.
