As low budget movies gain popularity, and horror films make a comeback to the big screen, B-film, low-budget horror movie fans will benefit as those films gain a new found recognition in the film industry. One such movie, “They Bite,” starring Columbus actor Nick Baldasare will have its Ohio premiere tonight at the AMC Lennox 24 Theatres. The movie will run for two nights as part of the midnight movie series at Lennox.Baldasare studied theater and learned film at Ohio University. He got his start in the industry at Ohio State making short films for students in the film department that formerly existed at OSU.It was through this department that Baldasare got into his first feature film, “Beyond Dream’s Door.” The movie was set and shot in and around the OSU campus and the city. Years later, the production manager remembered Baldasare from “Beyond Dream’s Door” and got him involved with “They Bite.””They Bite,” a science fiction spoof, is based in the gulf coast of Florida. In the movie, Baldasare plays a porn director who discovers that there are sea creatures terrorizing the gulf coast. He decides to try to document the creatures in an attempt to legitimize his career.Anybody who thinks they have seen everything possible in a B-movie would be pleasantly surprised by this movie, Baldasare said. He said it has a very intelligent script, decent acting and a big surprise for fans of this genre.”The movie has a scene that will knock the popcorn out the lap of the most jaded movie goer,” Baldasare said. “I won’t say what it is, but you will know when it happens.””They Bite” also stars adult film legend Ron Jeremy. Appearing in over 600 porn films, Jeremy added both a legitimate feel and a negative stigma to the film, Baldasare said.”While shooting in an old hotel down in Florida, we ran into a problem,” Baldasare said. “Workers of the hotel recognized Ron, and management kicked us out. They thought we were making a porn movie.”Although the movie was stigmatized as being an adult movie, Baldasare stressed that the movie is definitely not one. He admitted that the target audience is college-age males because of a little nudity, but he also thinks women would enjoy the movie.”The movie has a strong heroine role; the female lead is not a B-movie bimbo,” Baldasare said. “She is liberated, intelligent and does not take her clothes off. That is very rare in a B-movie.”Although film is his first love, Baldasare also does theater in Columbus. Last summer he participated in Shakespeare in the Park, and hopes to do it again this summer.Baldasare will be in attendance tonight for the premiere. He said he can’t wait to view the film with an audience because that is the way to see a film like this.”There are going to be prizes and T-shirts given away,” Baldasare said. “It is going to be like a party.”
