After only two weeks of official practices, the question is, are the Buckeyes ready to start the season? The test will be this Saturday at St. John Arena when fans will get their first look at the Ohio State men’s basketball team in action. The Buckeyes play Hoop Group, an international team, in an exhibition game to help prepare OSU for the upcoming regular season.OSU coach Jim O’Brien said the preseason game will be a learning experience for the team.”What we really need to do is to just continue to get our guys comfortable in the things we need to do,” O’Brien said. “I think we have to be very patient and still try and figure out just how good we possibly can be.”The Buckeyes lack depth in the front court with center, John Lumpkin unable to join the team until the end of the football season and an injury to forward, Shamar Herron, O’Brien said. The team will have to rely heavily on three point shooting.”Our strengths are going to be on the perimeter and that’s pretty obvious,” O’Brien said. “That’s where most of are returning player’s are.”Three point threats for the Buckeyes are junior guards, Neshaun Coleman and Jason Singleton, the two returning starters. Also expected to add to the three point bomb squad are starting guards Carlos Davis and either freshman guards Michael Redd or Jon Sanderson. “I think the perimeter, from the one man to the three man is going to be the key to us winning games,” said Coleman. “I think the majority of the scoring is going to come from the perimeter.”Rounding out the starting line-up for the Buckeyes is the lone big man, 6-foot-11-inch sophomore center, Ken Johnson.Johnson will receive a lot of minutes and be expected to be the go to guy down low while staying out of foul trouble, O’Brien said.”I don’t really have a lot of subs, so basically I’m gonna have to watch my fouls,” said Johnson. The loss of Damon Stringer with back problems, leaves the point guard position up in the air. Coleman and Davis will bring the ball up the court, but might also look for help from Redd, Sanderson, or Singleton, O’Brien said.No matter who brings the ball up the court, everyone knows what each other can do and are team is starting to gell together, Redd said.”I think we’re working really good as a team right now. We’re definitely coming together,” said Sanderson.”Everyone is real anxious to get out there and see what all this practice has done for us,” said Coleman. “We’re tired of playing each other. We’re ready to go out there and bang on somebody else.”
