A proposal to have Ohio State fund the installation of ResNet in all dormitories was made by Greg Krabacher, vice president of USG, to members at Wednesday night’s meeting.ResNet is a service that allows students to be directly wired to the OSU’s networking systems at all times. ResNet uses a network card which is placed in the computer. HomeNet requires a student to use a modem and a phone line. ResNet is also much faster than HomeNet, Krabacher said. With the dorms hooked up to ResNet, HomeNet usage should be reduced by 20 percent. It would also decrease the number of people using other labs on campus.Currently, to subscribe to ResNet in the dorms, it costs $15 a month, with a $150 set-up fee, he said.If OSU subsidizes the $1 million project, the new monthly fee for students will be around $4, he said.”I think we need to be in an environment where we have anytime, anywhere access,” he said. “We need to move towards an environment where people can get on the web to get information instead of having to walk all around campus for information.”Every dorm room would be charged for installation, regardless if they owned a computer or not, he said.Chris Elsasser, Senate representative from the Marion campus, proposed to write a resolution of appreciation on behalf of OSU to Madeleine Albright, Secretary of State; William Cohen, Secretary of Defense; and Samuel Berger, White House National Security Adviser.John Carney, president of USG, was upset about how the town meeting at St. John Arena was handled.People, not just students, lacked respect, he said.”They kept yelling and they cut other people off when they were trying to talk,” he said. “I hope the university doesn’t take a black eye for this.” No official decision was made on the proposal.USG also decided to give $1000 to pay for a new student safety guide. The new guide will include crime prevention tips, a map that shows the safest streets to travel on campus, and the most commonly used COTA bus lines by students and their route information, said Shantell Feeser, USG intern and member of the safety guide committee.
