The fifth-ranked Ohio State men’s gymnastics team lost the battle of the Big Ten heavyweights Saturday when the Buckeyes fell to the fourth-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions in Happy Valley.OSU (227.225) was edged out by Penn State (230.550). The Lions recorded the highest score in the country so far this year.OSU’s overall record against Penn State stands at 13-10.”Overall, our performance should have been better,” said coach Miles Avery. “We didn’t perform up to our full potential.”OSU’s record stands at 8-3 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten.OSU junior Doug Stibel placed second in the all-around (56.9) and first on the horizontal bar (9.75).Junior Tim Elsner placed second on the floor exercise (9.75) and teammate Mike Morgan tied for third (9.65) with Penn State’s Mike Dutka.Peter Laundry placed third on the still rings (9.75).Penn State captured the top three spots on the vault, pommel horse and parallel bars.”As a coaching staff, we need to address what we have to do to make things happen,” Avery said. “We need to concentrate on making our routines more consistent.”Next weekend, OSU travels East Lansing, Mich., to take on Michigan State. The Spartans, ranked No.1 in the Big Ten and second in the nation, do not lose often at home, Avery said.In 1996, when OSU won the national championship, competing at Michigan State was their toughest meet of the season, according to Avery. The Buckeyes only won by two tenths of a point.OSU’s all-time record against Michigan State is 23-23-1.
