The $1 million facelift on Parks Hall has pharmacy students learning elsewhere. The building, located at 500 W. 12th Ave., is home to the College of Pharmacy and will be completed by next summer. The temporary relocation of pharmacy classes and other facilities to west campus inconveniences some, but the transition has been fairly smooth, said Kenneth Hale, assistant dean of students for the pharmacy college.”We made the best of a bad situation,” Hale said.Bridget Grubbs, a second-year student majoring in pharmacy, said, “While the final outcome will be beneficial to all students, the current circumstances have taken some getting used to.”The move has caused small inconveniences for both students and staff, but problems are addressed as they happen, Hale said.Christine Lenke, a senior majoring in pharmacy, was more optimistic. “The inconveniences seem minimal when you look at the enhanced educational opportunities that will result from the new facilities,” she said.Hale said the west campus buildings are on the OSU bus loop, and parking is also readily available.”It is not as convenient as walking down the hall, but it’s not that bad,” said Joe Dasta, professor of pharmacy. “I have always been able to find a parking spot.”Some of the changes include: classroom and lab additions to the southwest corner of the building, faculty offices on the first floor, and small classrooms on the second floor, Hale said. Cleaning rooms, tearing out carpet, stripping walls and moving furniture began Oct. 1.”The actual construction should begin anytime,” Hale said. The project, designed by Burges and Niple Limited, 5085 Reed Rd., was funded primarily by the College of Pharmacy Alumni Association and OSU funds.Other changes include renovating the lounge, installing new student mailboxes and adding vending machines and a new kitchen, Hale said.A new southwest entrance will include a patio and sitting area with benches, Hale said.Temporary classrooms and labs for about 400 students, faculty, and teaching assistants are in Vivian Hall, Howlett Hall, the Agricultural Engineering Building, the Agricultural Administration Building and Kottman Hall on west campus, a 12-minute walk from Park Hall, Hale said.Pharmacy administrative offices will remain in Park Hall throughout the construction.
