The fire that destroyed room 553 in Morrill Tower late Sunday night was ruled an accident. It was the result of an electrical fire.Thomas Ratcliff, a spokesman for the Ohio Department of Commerce, said the state fire marshal determined the point of origin of the fire was a surge protector in the bedroom.”Surge protectors, while safe, can overheat and it is important to keep clothing and other combustible materials away from the protector,” Ratcliff said. Robert Barnett, program coordinator for residence life, gave more details on why an alarm system did not work. The “all-call” system was installed so all floor alarms could be activated from a switch at the front desk, he said. It failed as a result of rust, which didn’t allow the proper voltage to activate all the floor alarms. Fifteen floors were ringing and 10 were not, he said. The problem has already been corrected and Applied Electronics, the company contracted to install and maintain fire alarms in Ohio State’s buildings, is testing the “all-call” alarm systems throughout campus, Barnett said. The system was tested and worked well in Morrill Tower in December, he said. The fire was completely contained in room 553. The room was almost completely gutted, said Steve Kremer, director of residence life. Smoke damaged much of the 550 suite, which should be restored within the next three weeks, he said. The eight residents of the suite were given several rooming options and decided to live together in the Fawcett Center Hotel. Rodney Traxler, the resident adviser of the fifth floor, said OSU gave money to residents in other suites to remove the smell from their clothes and bedding.
