Last Saturday, I rubbed my eyes and blinked twice. Standing on the stage at Chelsie’s stood two 24-year-old twin brothers, clad in Abercrombie & Fitch clothing calling themselves “Evan and Jaron.” I thought maybe I had made a mistake and instead of listening to a new folk-acoustic group from Atlanta, Ga., I had dropped in on the pop-rock group the Backstreet Boys. I was even more thrown off when female fans began shrieking and screaming, swarming the stage so they could make goo-goo eyes to the two good-looking guys. However, before I could blink again, Evan and Jaron Lowenstein ignored the female screams and began an upbeat, one-hour set of groovy folk songs from their new album called “We’ve Never Heard of You Either.” Showing confidence beyond their years, Evan and Jaron played to the young crowd with impressive electric guitar sound in songs like “There You Are Again,” and to harmonized ballads like “And Then She Says.””Our biggest influences in our music have been the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel and my favorite, Jackson Browne,” Jaron said. “We really like the music from the 1970’s, where all the songs had that West Coast feel to them. We try to follow that theme of telling a story in our songs”Jimmy Buffett has become one of the band’s biggest fans and supporters. “Jimmy has been wonderful. He was the one that got us to Island Records and our record deal,” Jaron said. “We are still working on it and hope that we will be touring with him this summer.”Evan told a story about Buffett bragging about Evan and Jaron to Billy Joel while vacationing in Hampton, N.Y.”I was speechless. I couldn’t believe he was actually talking to Billy Joel about us.” Jaron said. “That was just so unbelievable.”However, by opening for Buffett, Evan and Jaron may miss the small bars and venues where they began it all.”I really love touring now, because we get to meet so many different and great people.” Jaron said. “Once you head to that bigger venue, you miss out on really meeting your fans.”Giving up the smaller venues may disappoint their biggest fans of all, the females who flocked to Chelsie’s to gawk at this cute brother duo.”We’re just happy that they really enjoy our music,” Jaron said with a smile and a wink.
