Vegetarianism is not just a hobby
I have read many of Nathan Crabbe’s previous editorials and have found many to be interesting and thought-provoking, but when I read what he wrote about his three-and-a-half week stint as a vegetarian I found the essence of his point to be faulted. I am a vegetarian, but I am not trying to knock those of you who eat meat… that’s your decision. If you decide to become a vegetarian for the wrong reasons and are not committed from the start how can you expect to see the benefits of the way of thinking as a vegetarian? I don’t want to put animals into my body. End of conversation. I’m not making a political statement about anything. I just don’t want to do it. Why do people see that as such a threat? I don’t start a game of “20 Questions” when I find out someone eats meat so why do people start questioning me when they find out that I don’t? Being a vegetarian is a way of life for me. My eating habits don’t change just because Columbus has a Wendy’s on every corner. If you are a vegetarian because it is a commitment that you’ve made to yourself then that thought never crosses your mind. Being a committed vegetarian makes you see opportunities where a person who isn’t doing it for the right reasons sees none. I must say that there was one positive thing I saw in Nathan Crabbe’s editorial, it was that an ex-girlfriend made the comment, “Vegetarians are pussies. Real men eat meat.” Maybe he does have taste, despite his dislike of veggies.
