Coming into the last two games of the regular season, the Ohio State women’s field hockey team wanted to do a better job of scoring goals and also finish the season strongly with two Big Ten wins.Over the weekend, the Buckeyes (10-8, 6-4) accomplished both feats, as they beat Iowa 4-3 in overtime on Friday, and crushed Northwestern 6-1 on Sunday in front of 250 fans at the Woody Hayes Athletic Complex.OSU head coach Anne Wilkinson said that she was pleased with how her team stepped up their intensity on offense.”We definitely did a better job of finishing goals this weekend,” Wilkinson said. “I thought that our players did a good job of keeping their composure when the ball was around the other team’s goal.”On Sunday, the Buckeyes completely dominated Northwestern both offensively and defensively, as they outshot the Wildcats 22 to four. The Buckeyes drew first blood only 11 minutes into the game, when freshman forward Katie Hobson one-timed the ball past Northwestern goaltender Jessica Yates.”I think that Katie Hobson’s opening goal was really a powerful time of the game in terms of setting the tone of how we would finish goals and play today,” Wilkinson said. Two minutes later the Buckeyes took advantage of a penalty corner opportunity when All-American Britta Eickhoff received a pass from OSU forward Mieke van Ulden and buried the ball into the right corner of the net.Sophomore forward Jayne Landis then tipped a rebound in with only 35 seconds left in the first half, as the Buckeyes rolled to a 3-0 halftime lead.OSU senior defenders Nicole Hart and Jessica Findeison led a strong Buckeye defensive effort that did not allow a shot on goal during the first half.Just 21 seconds into the second half, van Ulden iced the win after outracing several Wildcat defenders and beating Yates with a hard shot to the left.Landis and Eickhoff each added a second goal later in the half, and OSU goaltender Nikki Thompson lost a shutout bid when forward Kristi Simons put Northwestern on the board with under 15 minutes left in the game.On Friday, the Buckeyes beat Iowa in much more dramatic fashion as junior defender Kate Brown collected a rebound that bounced off of Iowa goaltender Lisa Cellucci and fired the ball into the net for the victory.”It was unbelievable to beat Iowa in front of the home crowd,” Brown said. “That was only the second win we’ve ever had against Iowa (in 33 attempts) so it felt awesome to beat them.”With the regular season now concluded, Landis said that the Buckeyes will focus on the upcoming Big Ten tournament.”These wins have us so excited and so pumped,” Landis said. “I think we definitely have a good shot at winning the tournament because we are peaking at the right time.”
