Funeral services will be held Saturday for Liu Zhenru, 30, president of the Chinese Student and Scholar Society (CSSS), who drowned in Celina, Ohio, Saturday.Liu came to the U.S. two years ago from Beijing, China. She was offered a fellowship to earn her doctorate in animal science, said David Latshaw, a professor of animal science who was working with Liu.Last Saturday, Liu disappeared while swimming during a weekend vacation with friends. It took police and friends about a half-hour to locate her in the shallow, murky water. She had a faint pulse when she was pulled from the water, but died a few hours later at a local hospital. While president of the organization, Liu organized parties, seminars, trips and housing for Chinese students. Recently she organized a fashion show for Asian Awareness Week, prepared traditional foods for the International Students Festival and represented the organization in international activities.”She was very enthusiastic to serve the Chinese community, elected as the president of CSSS this year, she committed her time and energy to help the Chinese students and the Chinese community,” said Junxia Jernejcic, vice president of the organization.Friends remember Liu as a talented athlete, who was a champion in table tennis and badminton in the international student games this year. “She was responsible and a warm hearted person who spent her time working with new students,” said Jun Li, former president of the organization. Her parents, brother and sister could not afford to make the trip from China, friends said. “They wanted to see her one last time, but they are having financial difficulties,” Jernejcic said. Donations can be made in her honor to the Liu Zhenru Foundation, at P.O. Box 3599 Columbus, Ohio, 43210. The money raised will be used to pay for the funeral and the rest will be given to her family.”We lost a good friend, the organization lost a wonderful leader, China lost a valuable citizen; but the biggest loss is to her family,” Jernejcic said.A viewing will be held Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. followed by a memorial service at Rutherford Funeral Home, 2383 N. High St.
