Sunday, the Ohio State baseball team wrapped up its series with Michigan State and took one step closer to a Big Ten championship.The 11-4 victory put the Buckeyes (43-8, 22-2) over the top and handed them the series 3-1.The winning pitcher, senior Kurt Fullenkamp, threw seven innings and gave up two runs. The victory put his record at 4-0.OSU took a first-inning 3-0 lead in game four. Sophomore Chad Ehrnsberger got the offense started with an RBI single. Then junior Jason Turner put an two-RBI double down the first base line.The Buckeyes struck again in the third. Sophomore Mike Check put a bases-loaded single up the middle, scoring two. The third run scored was courtesy sophomore Trent McIlvain, who hit a grounder that bounced off the MSU third baseman’s glove, scoring senior Matt Middleton. The score was 6-0.In the sixth, senior Jason Trott put two Bucks across the plate with a double, then he scored on a single by Ehrnsberger.OSU finished scoring in the seventh when Middleton sent a two-run home run to right, scoring junior Jason Driscoll and putting the Bucks up 11-0.The series started out with a 34-4 slaughter of the Spartans.Middleton led the OSU offense, batting for the cycle and racking up seven runs.OSU took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Turner hit a sacrifice fly scoring junior Mike Lockwood. Driscoll doubled, scoring another run. Middleton then put a two-RBI single into right.The Buckeyes took a 7-2 advantage in the third. Driscoll got things started with a homer to left. Middleton put his triple for the night into center and scored on a single by McIlvain. McIlvain stole second and scored on a Lockwood single.The Buckeye offenses broke the game wide open in the fourth and fifth innings chalking up eight runs. Turner put up one of his two home runs in the fourth. Then Middleton put a double toward his cycle, and sophomore John Mayor rounded claimed his first long ball of the year, a three-run shot over the left field wall.The Buckeyes put three runs up in the fifth, led by a Middleton two-RBI double.In the sixth, Turner put a double off the center field wall and scored two, then scored on a single by Middleton.The seventh was an OSU home run derby with Lockwood, senior Tom Durant and freshman Doug Dendinger putting up homers and another five runs. After six and a half innings, the Buckeyes had a 23-4 lead, and they weren’t finished. Eleven runs had yet to be scored, including home runs by Turner, Dendinger and Middleton.On Saturday, OSU took the first game of a doubleheader 11-1 and set the school record for longest win streak (21 games). Andy Lee pitched a complete game, striking out seven batters, to put his record at 7-0.Lockwood and Durant had back-to-back homers in the fourth, while senior Jason Trott went 2-4 with two RBIs and Dendinger batting 2-2 with three RBIs.Despite a home run by Driscoll, MSU snapped the OSU win streak in game two of Saturday’s double header with a 10-5 win.Freshman E.J. Laratta threw four innings and took the OSU loss. His record stands at 8-2.This weekend, the Buckeyes will host Indiana to finish regular season play, and see if they can clinch the Big Ten title. Depending on the conclusion of the Minnesota series, OSU will need a maximum of two wins to claim the championship.
