What would Satan’s children look like? In Adam Sandler’s new movie, “Little Nicky,” that question is answered. It has been 10,000 years since the Devil (Harvey Keitel) has been ruling hell. His reign is up, though. It is time to pick a successor. The Devil’s three sons are up for the crown. They are Adrian (Rhys Ifans), Cassius (Tom Lister Jr.) and Nicky (Sandler). When the Devil picks himself as his own successor, Cassius and Adrian are understandably upset, so they go to the surface to create their own hell and it is Nicky’s job to bring them back. That’s about it for the film – a typical Sandler movie with no plot, no reason to have been made and a lot of physical and insulting humor. This one is only for the die-hard Sandler fans. It is odd to see him in a role that departs from his normal schtick. In the movie, he’s not human. He can perform supernatural feats and he’s sort of a bad guy – he’s the Devil’s son! There are some visible differences in “Little Nicky” when compared to past Sandler movies. One of the most recognizable oddities is the addition of special effects. With exception to the morphing faces in “The Waterboy,” most Sandler movies have not had special effects. That changes in this big-budget flick. The scenes in hell with the fire, monsters and demons are impressive – for a comedy. But these might remind the audience of something they saw on Mystery Science Theater. Some of the action, including the fight scenes between the brothers are also impressive, but it probably would not have made a difference if they were excluded. Many Sandler movies have had memorable quotes, which this movie seems to lack. Perhaps it’s because the voice Sandler uses is so annoying, the audience automatically tries to forget his lines. There are some funny parts, of course, but gone is the juvenile Sandler who has entertained us since his days on MTV’s “Remote Control.” Sandler comes off as a much darker character in “Little Nicky.” Yet even so, he is not as evil as his brothers. This movie has an interesting theme. Just like other Sandler movies, there are a cast of stars with minimal roles. A fun game might be trying to recognize them all, including Quentin Taratino, Reese Witherspoon and re-emerging characters from past Sandler flicks. All in all, the end is what saves this movie. Don’t get frustrated and leave; stay and see if Nicky can save the world. All in all, “Little Nicky” will most likely be Sandler’s first flop. Every actor has at least one. If you are a die-hard Sandler fan, you’ll probably go see it – but just once.
