University District residents don’t have to sit back and complain about neighborhood problems; they can instead participate in making changes.

The University Area Commission is preparing for its elections to fill four positions with university residents.

The UAC provides a voluntary opportunity for residents to participate in decisions directly affecting their local neighborhoods.

“The UAC is a place for people who have thoughts about solving problems in their neighborhood,” said Catherine Girves, chairwoman of the UAC election committee.

The elections are open to anyone who lives in one of the four districts of the university area, said Ron Hupman, UAC president. Each district has four representatives who each serve a three-year term. One representative is elected from each district every year.

Each candidate must be at least 18 years old, must have lived in the area since April 1, and must be able to provide proof of residence, Hupman said.

All eligible candidates must complete and return the required election packet by May 16.

“This is a great experience for people who have an interest in elected office, social services and community and city planning,” Girves said.

There are 12 elected, five appointed and three nominated positions on the UAC. Commissioners are required to attend monthly meetings and serve on two committees which also meet monthly. Committees include planning, zoning, safety and health, code enforcement and community and public safety.

The purpose of the UAC is to examine issues concerning the University District and make recommendations to City Council, Hupman said.

“We bring the citizens into the City Council,” said Sharon Young, first vice president of the UAC.

Some issues the UAC is involved in are the riot task force, code enforcement, zoning and environmental issues, and working closely with campus partners, Hupman said.

“We’re thinking about the University District and the issues that directly affect the area,” Girves said.

Anyone interested in the UAC election can get information and an election packet at www.universityareacommission.org.

The elections will be held on June 7.
