UConn students fake kidnapping
Three students at the University of Connecticut were arrested for staging a fake kidnapping. They were caught when a motorist noticed someone gagged and blindfolded in the next car and notified police.
The students claim they were conducting a psychological experiment on how people react to distress. Teachers at the school think they were trying to pull off a stunt like those on the MTV program “Jackass.”
The students did not do this as a class assignment or with permission from a university institution review board, which approves experiments that involve human subjects.
Students march to rejoice graduation
To celebrate the end of their undergraduate careers and finished theses, faculty members and 27 honors students marched through the center of Wheaton College’s campus in Massachusetts earlier this month.
The tradition began in 1998 and has grown since then. This year, the march took on a Mardi Gras theme, with marchers throwing beads and candy to excited crowd members.
Music accompanies the march, the theme song is called “The March of the Acid-Free Paper,” which was written just for the event.
Student couple gives $25K to school
Unlike the average student who takes out loans to pay for college, a retired couple at the San Francisco State University is giving money away while taking classes.
Gary F. Bengier, who is taking math and science classes, and his wife Cynthia S. Bengier, who is finishing her master’s degree in history, have donated a total of $25,000 to the university that will be used as $1,000 individual undergraduate scholarships. This has doubled the number of scholarships from 25 last year to 50 this year.
The couple said they are donating the money because they remember what it was like when they were undergraduates and struggling with money.
