Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3.

Applicants must be full-time students who are not in a leadership position for a prominent community/school organization such as USG.

If selected, columnists will be required to write approximately 10 columns (one column every week) about a variety of topics of their choosing.

All applicants must submit a sample column based on the following criteria:a. Column must not exceed 550 words.b. Column must includ Name, Rank, Major, Phone Number and E-mail address at the bottom of the submission.c. Column must be submitted before 5 p.m. Wednesday, September 3.d. Topic will be selected from one of two prompts that will be posted on www.thelantern.come. Column must be sent as an e-mail or as an e-mail attachment, and must be sent to [email protected].Based on the sample column submitted, selected applicants will be asked to come to The Lantern newsroom for a face-to-face interview with the Opinion Editor. In the event that a meeting cannot be arranged, the Opinion Editor will conduct a phone interview.

Prompts:1.) Currently, there is legislation going through the United States Congress which would make flag-burning as a form of protest illegal. The House of Representatives has passed this legislation, and it is now in the hands of the Senate, which is reported as likely to reject it. Is flag-burning a legitimate form of protest and should it have protected rights? If so, why? If not, why not? Include your thoughts on the First Amendment right of free speech, patriotism, destruction of property, and/or any combination of these and other considerations.2.) During the first year as Ohio State president, Karen A. Holbrook’s actions have been met with both applause and disapproval. What are the most important challenges facing Holbrook going into the summer and next academic year? What should Holbrook focus most of her energies on, and how should she approach these issues?
