The 12th-ranked Ohio State men’s volleyball team lost for the first time, as No. 8 Brigham Young University took both matches from the Buckeyes over the weekend.
Despite outside hitter Andy Cole’s career day of 30 points on 29 kills and two assist blocks, the Cougars (3-3) were able to knock off the Buckeyes in four games by a score of 3-1 (30-23, 30-23, 28-30, 30-25) Saturday at St. John Arena.
“(BYU) is a good team; we can’t put that past them,” OSU’s Layne Dreven said. “We played our hearts out there (Saturday).”
BYU’s balanced scoring attack was led by outside hitter Fernando Pessoa, who scored 18 points on 15 kills, a serving ace, a solo block and two assist blocks. Outside hitters Jonathan Alleman, Victor Batista and Joe Hillman scored 17, 15.5 and 12 points, respectively.
Other Buckeyes in double figures included middle hitter Scott Spurlock and outside hitter Mark Greaves. Spurlock recorded 13 points on a season-high 11 kills and four assist blocks, while Greaves scored 11 points on seven kills, a service.
