On Jan. 3, Buckeyes receiver Anthony Gonzales told reporters that he felt college athletes were one of the most exploited groups of people in the United States. He went on to state that college athletes “really don’t see” any of the revenue big time college sports programs bring in.

Although I’m an OSU and Gonzo fan, I must admit, this comment rubbed me the wrong way. First, college athletes are amateurs; if you want to make millions, play professional sports or sign a shoe deal. Second, Mr. Gonzales overlooked some of the benefits he and other athletes receive due to sports revenues: weight rooms, indoor practice fields, stadiums, endless sportswear, and a quality education.

In closing, I’m a realist and recognize that most people want some coin to pay bills and enjoy life a little. But Gonzo, come on man, you’re an outstanding NCAA D-1 football player hopefully on the way to the NFL; life can’t be all that bad. You’re living a dream in which countless people would forgo large sums of money to experience even if only for a day. Instead of casting yourself as an “amateur martyr,” simply enjoy the ride.

Go Bucks!
