Two projects are underway in the new Ohio Union that will showcase what it’s like to be a Buckeye. The new building will include a book collection and a stained-glass art project to represent life at OSU.
The book collection will feature more than 400 books written by OSU staff, students and alumni. The collection, called the All Ohio State Book Collection, is being arranged by student group Ohio Staters, Inc.
“The books are written by alumni, faculty and staff members,” said Jaimie Horning, administration assistant for the Ohio Union.
The collection will be located on the second floor in the west lounge of the Union and will be on display when the building opens, Horning said. It will include multiple genres of literature.
“They range from novels, memoirs, art books, how-to’s and much more,” Horning said.
There will also be a piece of stained-glass artwork installed in the new Union.
Photographs of students will be represented in the 3-foot-wide, multi-paneled window. A university photographer took pictures of more than 1,000 people for the project.
Beth Ullum, assistant director of special projects at the Ohio Union, said the glass art will represent the entire OSU community.
“We photographed greek students, band students, international students and a lot of other student groups,” Ullum said. “We wanted to capture the essence of being a student at OSU.”
Once the piece is completed, it will show the uniqueness of OSU’s student body, she said.
“We wanted to show all the wacky-but-fun passions people get involved with here,” Ullum said. “We wanted to celebrate diversity of students in a cool way at the university.”
The two projects will be on display when the new Union opens. Ullum said both the book collection and the stained-glass window will illustrate the unique experience at OSU.
“They will represent the interests and diversity of the university community,” Ullum said.
