The Ohio State women’s gymnastics team bounced back after losing to Minnesota last weekend to defeat Illinois and Rutgers on Saturday.’We were much more focused this week,’ said coach Larry Cox. ‘We are a very competitive team and we came in to the meet with the attitude to win and fix the mistakes from last week.’The Buckeyes compiled a team total of 194.6 to outscore Illinois (193.55) and Rutgers (189.025).Winning the all-around competition for the second week in a row was OSU junior Susan Eckman with a total score of 39.3. Eckman also placed first on the uneven parallel bars (9.875), second on vault (9.85) and tied for second on the floor exercise (9.8) with fighting Illini junior Kim Berres.’I am gaining confidence on the floor and beam, while staying consistent on the vault and bars,’ Eckman said.OSU junior Mindi Farmer placed third in the all-around, posting a total score of 38.375.’I am so happy with the team’s performance today,’ Farmer said. ‘We had an off-meet last week against Minnesota, but really picked it up today.’Other Buckeye stand-outs include sophomore Becky Wolfe who won the floor exercise (9.825), freshman Lindsey Vagedes who won on the vault (9.875), and sophomore Elizabeth Jensen who placed second on the beam (9.85) and tied for third on the uneven parallel bars (9.8) with Illinois freshman Phaedra Dixon.’I attribute a lot of our success today to Kelly Harper who competed for the first time all year,’ Eckman said.Junior Kelly Harper, who was out with a sprained muscle in her back, competed on the vault. Last year, Harper was second in the Big Ten on vault. Next week OSU travels to Happy Valley for their first away meet of the season to face the Penn State Nittany Lions who are ranked fifth in the nation.’Happy Valley is a great place to compete,’ Cox said. ‘Penn State pulls in a very supportive and knowledgeable crowd ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 people every time.’Ohio State’s record against Penn State is 12-19.’Penn State has been very consistent this year scoring 193 and higher every meet,’ Farmer said. ‘We will all have to hit our routines in order to win.’
