The days of filing insurance claims after visits to the Student Health Center are numbered.Administrators hope to start sending claim forms to insurance companies at the beginning of fall quarter, said Fawn Thompson, student benefit coordinator at the health center.”Our plan is to begin directly filing claim forms on the behalf of the student with their insurance company,” Thompson said. This service will offer convenience to the students, said Diane Plumly, assistant director of financial affairs at the health center.”It will eliminate the student’s responsibility of sending the insurance claim forms,” Plumly said. “A lot of students don’t want to have to deal with the paperwork.”Although this new service will save students time, they must still pay any balance their insurance doesn’t cover, she said.Courtney Clough, a freshman majoring in occupational therapy, said her life will be made easier by the new system.”It will be one less thing to worry about when you are sick,” Clough said.Amber Lowe, an undecided freshman, said she gets aggravated when her insurance company does not accept the forms she sends. Her insurance company wants the health center to send claim forms to the company because it looks more official, she said.Thompson said the health center is in the process of trying to put this automation process together.”We are working through it and gathering information,” Thompson said. “We are setting up the process and implementing it.”The health center is setting up a computer system to be able to collect information from the students during registration, Thompson said. The health center will develop new policies and train their staff members to start this service.Thompson said she is not certain of how much the new process will cost OSU.
