There are very few true rock groups left in the world and even fewer bands that can alter their sound without completely changing their style. U2 proves once again on the soundtrack for “Million Dollar Hotel” that they are one of the few.As with their previous CDs, this album gives the listener an entirely new U2 experience. The sound isn’t angry and politically charged as on U2’s “War” album or upbeat like the discotheque mixes from U2’s “Pop” record. Instead, the 16 tracks, released March 14 by Interscope Records, have a sultry, rainyday jazz feel. There are two entirely new U2 tracks, “The Ground Beneath Her Feet” and “Stateless,” and three new songs co-written by U2’s lead vocalist, Bono, and the Million Dollar Hotel Band with Bono on vocals, guitar and piano, Daniel Lanois on guitars and vocals, Jon Hassell on trumpet, Brian Eno on synthesizers, Greg Cohen on bass, Brian Blade on drums, Adam Dorn on beats and Bill Frisell on guitar. The melancholy, unattainable love lyrics of “Stateless,” which hasn’t received as much radio play as “The Ground Beneath Her Feet,” features Bono’s soft, mellow voice accompanied by a spacey melody. As with most soundtrack albums, there are some purely instrumental songs, like “Tom Tom’s Dream,” “Bathtub” and “Funny Face.” A muffled trumpet and slow beat make these tracks the perfect background music for a lazy afternoon.Even the film’s lead actress, Milla Jovovich, lends her breathy voice and subdued, sorrowful cries to Lou Reed’s “Satellite of Love.”The whispering refrains and drawn-out lyrics on the rest of the tracks are done so softly and with such feeling, one is provoked to float about the room peacefully dancing.Only the final track, “Anarchy in the USA,” which features Spanish lyrics and an upbeat rock sound by Tito Larriva and the MDH Band, feels out of place on the CD.Bono is not only a featured vocalist on the album, he is also one of the executive producers of the soundtrack and the man behind the original idea for the movie, which won the coveted Silver Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival. The movie’s U.S. release date has not yet been confirmed.U2 is finishing up their tenth studio album, which is slated for release this year.
