Libraries party for one millionth book

May 26, 1953: Ohio State libraries celebrate the accessioning of the one millionth volume, The World & the West by Arnold Toynbee. As of June 3, 2001 OSU held over 5.4 million volumes in its libraries.

Quarters make war training easier

May 29, 1918: Faculty vote in favor of a four quarter plan for classes. The U.S. War department imposed the quarter system on colleges that participated in the Student Army Training Corp, which OSU was one of these participants, in order to prepare more officers for battle in a shorter period of time. After the war, many universities, like OSU, kept the quarter system. The quarter system was officially adopted by OSU in 1922.

OSU admits all Ohio high school grads

May 31, 1876: OSU resolved to admit all Ohio high school graduates into the university without any further examination because of the desperate need of students. OSU had open admissions until 1987, when selective admissions was implemented. The selective admission based acceptance on academic standing.
