We all wonder what our parents were like when they were kids. We all look at pictures of them at various ages and think we have an idea of what they looked like.Going to watch the Cleveland Indians play the Florida Marlins in the World Series gave me the chance to see what my father looked like when he went to the Series in 1954, he was 8-years-old. Although I didn’t get to see him throw up from excitement on the way home, I did get to see his eyes light up because he was at the Series for the second time in three years.I went to a few games during the regular season, but what I saw Thursday night during game five was not to be believed. The national anthem was not sung that night, instead Bruce Hornsby played the piano while Branford Marsalis played the clarinet.Fireworks blared overhead. Silver, blue, and red streamers were flying everywhere while hundreds of blue and red balloons were released to the sky. That will be a pregame show I will remember forever.Alice Licker remembers opening day in 1969. She recalls Albert Belle hitting a grand slam in 1995. She remembers her favorite opening day in 1996, when there was a horrible snow storm. Licker also remembers that the Cleveland Indians haven’t won a championship in over forty years.”The most exciting thing about being at the World Series this year is simply having tickets and being able to go,” Licker said. When I asked how she felt about the Indians being due to win a championship Licker said, “If we don’t win the Series it isn’t a big deal. Cleveland is a sports city and we will support our teams no matter what.”So will fans from Florida. Mark Blank of Miami, got tickets for all three games at Jacob’s Field. As I approached him, he jokingly asked, “Who are the Marlins playing tonight?””I can sum up the World Series with two words – agony and ecstasy. We’ve lost two games and we’ve won two games- that’s agony and ecstasy,” Blank said.I asked how he felt about Cleveland fans, the best fans in baseball. “The people are great. Everyone has been very warm and hospitable,” Blank said.”The difference between the Indians and the Marlins are that Cleveland has had a baseball team longer and their fans are more familiar with baseball,” said Tisa Rand, wife of the assistant trainer for the Marlins. The Florida Marlins have only been a team for five years. That makes a difference when they play a team that has been around as long as baseball itself.Rand said the strangest thing about the World Series was the snow. “We certainly aren’t used to it,” said Rand.No matter who you talk to – be it Marlins fan or Indians fan – they all feel the same. It’s every fan of baseball’s dream to have their team play in the World Series. Whether their team wins or loses, it’s awesome just to be there.
