Ohio State can no longer claim the biggest student enrollment in the country, Texas is now No.1.”We are the newly anointed number one university in the land,” said Augustine Garza, deputy director of admissions at Texas. The University of Texas had an enrollment of 48,857 this fall according to Marsha Moss, assistant vice president of institutional studies at Texas. OSU enrolled 48,278 students this fall. “There is no reason to be the biggest,” said Malcolm Barroway, executive director of university communications. “We just try to be the best we can be.”Texas was not even aware that they were approaching such a distinction.”We certainly didn’t go searching for this honor,” said Garza. “We were very surprised and it was unexpected.”OSU has been downsizing for the last six years to achieve a number of students that is comfortable for the university, said Scott Haley, director of undergraduate admissions.”We are trying to raise the standards of the incoming classes,” Haley said. “We are looking at a smaller number of faculty and students.”OSU is attempting to make residence halls more spacious to give students more room in the towers, Barroway said. The goal is to increase the quality level of students, and to increase the number of minorities, Barroway said.”Our primary reason for the downsizing to under 48,000 was driven by a need to improve the quality of student life,” said Jim Majer. assistant vice president for enrollment management.OSU has eliminated most bachelor programs in the College of Education, which had a significant effect on the downsizing of the university, Majer said. OSU has also decreased the size of the College of Business, Majer said.Texas has been under a similar enrollment management plan to target their enrollment to about 48,000, Moss said. Their main focus is to provide quality undergraduate education and they will continue to do so in the future, Moss said. There is some management concern because of the larger than usual freshman class at Texas, Garza said. There were 600-700 more freshmen than last year, Garza said.OSU had an average freshmen enrollment of 8,300 a decade age. Today it’s about 5,800, Barroway said.”We have always had parking problems,” Moss said. “I haven’t heard any complaints about crowding in the classrooms. Some units have added courses to accommodate the growth.”Parking problems at OSU were another reason behind the downsizing, Majer said.
