Luke Fickell will remain the head coach through a bowl game, if Ohio State is given an opportunity to play in one this postseason.

“Coach Fickell will continue to be our coach for the bowl game,” said Gene Smith, athletic director at OSU. “He will be the head coach for the bowl game.”

Fickell, who was named OSU’s interim coach following former head coach Jim Tressel’s forced resignation, completed his season as head coach with a 6-6 record, and will look to improve his record in a bowl game this year.

Newly- appointed OSU head coach Urban Meyer said that his involvement will be focused on recruiting until spring football starts. Meyer did not say what role Fickell will have on the team after the bowl game.

“It will be a significant title and significant position on our staff,” Meyer said.

Smith said this will continue to be Fickell’s team until spring practice starts.

“We’ll separate Urban (Meyer) from coaching this team,” Smith said. “He’ll go to practice on occasion. But he will focus on building his staff, building his organization and recruiting. He will not be involved in game planning.”
