Baseball Buckeyes capture Desert Classic

The Ohio State baseball team brought some thunder to the desert as they rolled through the 18th annual Coors Desert Classic.The Buckeyes slammed tournament host UNLV – the No. 22 team in the country – to the tune of 18-1 Monday night. A seven-run first inning was all the Buckeyes would need as junior pitcher Andy Lee rolled. Lee struck out eight, walked one and gave up one earned run in seven innings to run his record to a perfect 3-0 on the year.Mike Lockwood and Mark Carek led off the game with back-to-back singles. Jason Trott walked and Mike Kremblas reached on an error, bringing in Lockwood. Chad Ehrnsbager walked, Carek scored and the Rebels pulled starter Bryan Gidge.Jason Turner then doubled to left, bringing in Trott and Kremblas. Dan Zabloudi walked, Ehrnesbarger scored on a wild pitch and Turner scored on a sacrifice fly by Tom Durant. Zabloudi, who advanced to third on Durant’s fly ball, scored on a Lou Santangelo grounder to first, running the count to 7-0.The Bucks tacked on three more in the second, three in the fourth, two more in the fifth and three in the sixth. The Rebels scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth.OSU moves to 7-4 on the season. The Buckeyes kick off their home season Friday and Saturday against Pittsburgh at Bill Davis Stadium.Track and FieldTamieka Porter and Erika Goines will compete in the NCAA Championships Friday and Saturday in Indianapolis.Porter will compete in the triple jump, while Goines will compete in the shot put. Porter’s best mark this season is a school-record leap of 42’10-1/4,” while Goines, an all-american, has a top mark of 51’9-3/4,” also a school-record.Men’s VolleyballThe Buckeyes continued their recent hot streak, winning their 12th in a row with a 3-0 win over Quincy Monday night.Outside hitter Phil Kerewich was named the MIVA player of the week for the second time this season. The Buckeyes take on Juniata at 7:30 tonight at St. John Arena.
