Energy and pop with a groove. That’s how Brownie Mary’s guitarist Rich Jacques describes what showgoers will find in the group’s performances.Brownie Mary rocked fans at Woody’s Place in the Ohio Union Wednesday night, drawing more and more listeners as they played on.’We have a really good time, and if you come to one of our shows you’re going to have a good time,’ said Kelsey Barber, lead singer of the group. The four-member band played songs from their first and second CDs entitled ‘That’s Me’, released in November 1994, and ‘Who’s your daddy?’, released one year later. The show lasted nearly 90 minutes and included two encores, which the audience demanded. Jacques and Barber are joined by drummer Mark Rajakovic and bassist Ron Bissel to form one of the hottest new bands around. ‘The first time I heard them I absolutely loved them,’ said Marcy Whitcomb, an Ohio State senior who attended the show. The group signed with Blackburn Records, a division of Electra Records earlier this month.Barber said a major goal of the band is to expose their music to as many people as possible and to make people happy with the original sounds of their songs. She said Brownie Mary’s music is ‘pop/rock with a slight alternative’ and she loves it when the audience gets into their shows. The band’s name comes from a California woman named Mary Rathbun who worked as a hospital volunteer tending to AIDS and cancer patients. The press nicknamed her ‘Brownie Mary’ because she was arrested numerous times for distributing marijuana brownies to help patients combat side effects of their disease. The band got Rathbun’s permission to use her name and has maintained contact with her.Brownie Mary’s next Columbus performance will be April 26 at Chelsie’s.
