What Ohio State football teams often find a difficult proposition–beating Michigan in Ann Arbor–the Buckeye baseball team pulled off twice in winning the Big Ten postseason tournament and clinching a spot in the NCAA Regional. In Saturday’s championship game, the Buckeyes (42-16) defeated the Wolverines (36-22) 8-5 at Fisher Stadium, giving OSU a 3-0 record in the tourney and measure of revenge over the Maize and Blue.”As a senior, it means a lot to me,” second baseman Alex Eckelman said. “We weren’t satisfied when we lost the Big Ten up here last week. It’s good to beat them here on their home turf.”As the Michigan players walked off their field, the Buckeyes huddled around the championship trophy and broke into the fight song while the OSU fans cheered.Mike Stafford (4-2) pitched 4 2/3 innings in relief of Kurt Fullenkamp for the win. The converted first baseman was overcome with emotion after striking out the final batter.”I live 10 miles from here, and Michigan never recruited me, but coach Todd was willing to take a chance on me,” Stafford said. “It feels good to beat them up here.”Stafford came on in the fifth inning after Michigan had closed to 5-4 with three runs off of Fullenkamp. The Buckeyes had plated four of their own in the fourth, all with two outs. After Jason Trott grounded into a double play, Jason Driscoll homered to left. Chris Bailey walked and Dan Zabloudil singled before Mike Lockwood singled to drive in Bailey. Mark Carek stepped to the plate bogged down in a 0 for 10 slump, but his double to left-center drove in two more runs.OSU added two more two-out runs in the fifth on another Lockwood single. Trott led off with a double, and Bailey walked. Both advanced on a wild pitch as Lockwood came to bat. Down 0-2 in the count, he worked it to 2-2 and fouled off several pitches before lining a single to center, pushing the Bucks in front 7-4.Lockwood was 4 for 5 in the game, the freshman centerfielder was named the tournament’s outstanding player.”Revenge was in the back of our minds,” Lockwood said. “We came out tough in our first two games. We’ve been wanting this since fall.”In both the Buckeyes’ second and third games, they started slowly before putting together a big inning.”We missed a couple of opportunities early,” coach Bob Todd said. “Every time we got people on we were hitting into double plays.”In each game, the bottom five hitters provided the sparks to get the offense moving.”Every inning we feel like we have a chance to score runs, no matter where we are in the lineup,” Todd said.In Friday’s game, Justin Fry (10-2) fought off illness to pitch a complete game and defeat Michigan 9-2. The day before, Fry couldn’t even walk a few feet without getting winded.”I felt all right today,” Fry said. “Quick innings helped out a lot.””I think you saw today why Justin Fry is the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year,” Todd said. “He had the chance to fold and didn’t.”Dan Seimetz hit his 18th home run, Driscoll and Eckelman had three hits apiece.”They scored some runs and we just weren’t able to get back in the game,” Michigan coach Geoff Zahn said. “There’s no question we had opportunities to break open the game and we didn’t.”The Buckeyes will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, where and when they play will be announced Monday.”They’ll represent the Big Ten well in the regional,” Zahn said.
