If you’re looking for a cheap, good time and some great information, the Condom Club is free to students. To participate in the club, students must watch a five to 10 minute demonstration on proper latex use, after which they receive a complimentary package including a mint-flavored condom, lubricants and a dental dam,Sarah Schepker, an Ohio State sexual health care educator, said. “The majority of people are very supportive of this program,” she said. With a valid OSU student ID, members receive a card good for 10 latex condoms for $1 from the Student Health Center Pharmacy, she said. Various Lifestyles and Trojan condoms with or without spermicide are available. The card is good until the student graduates.Last year, 1,038 students belonged to the club, Schepker said. This year 366 students have joined, Schepker said. The club has about equal numbers of male and female members. “(The Condom Club) is a good way to promote safer sex,” said Amanda Dillard, a student majoring in psychology. It’s not OSU’s responsibility to provide the club, but it is a positive activity for them to be involved with, she said. The Student Wellness Center and the Student Health Center Pharmacy have sponsored the club for the past four years, Schepker said. There is a potentially good and bad side to the Condom Club, said Ross Downing, an International Studies major.”It’s good that you can get them, but if you are paranoid about people knowing your business then it may be bad,” he said. Health care workers, including students, will probably be more mature about it, Downing said. Schepker offered some advice when purchasing protection.Students should make sure condoms are made of latex, Schepker said. It is also important to check the expiration date. “Try to find condoms with a date as far away as possible,” Schepker said. As for spermicide, Nonoxynol-9 is recommended, but some people are allergic to it, she said. To test for an allergy, place a dab of the spermicide on your inner wrist or thigh. If the area reacts within 10 minutes then you might be allergic. Daily demonstrations are done at OSU’s Student Wellness Center. They begin at 10:30 a.m. and run every half hour until 4 p.m., except between 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m.
