Cola war editorial leaves a bad taste

Last Wednesday’s editorial “Cola wars hit campus, God disapproves” was pathetic and I can see why no one signed his or her name to it. The very title suggests that you have access to God’s opinions. When did this happen? Is there a direct connection to God from the Journalism Department? Can I use it too?; I have some questions to ask Him before finals week. You made a comparison between OSU selling out to big corporations, to “twenty pieces of silver.” Is this supposed to be referring to Judas selling out Jesus and leading to the most famous crucifixion in history? Actually according to the Bible, Judas received thirty pieces of silver. Are you referring to his after taxes take home pay? Either way, this is quite possibly the worst analogy I’ve ever heard. Then you go on to question how the mission of this university, “could allow itself to be perverted by greed.” How does corporate money, from Coke, Pepsi or even Nike, somehow hurt our education? Three factors that do affect our education are class size, quality of professors and educational resources. On this planet, all three require MONEY! Yes, we do get state money, but that does not pay all the bills. Every dollar we get from the outside is one less dollar that the students have to pay.My advice to anyone who feels the size and abundant resources (or football team) of OSU are too much to bear, is to avoid taking 315 south on your way out of town. I know a small community college in Kentucky that isn’t burdened with these problems. For those who like all of the “things” that OSU has to offer and want more (like a new Larkins Hall), realize that “things” cost money. So if Kirwan can get Nike, Schottenstein or the Pillsbury Doughboy to pay millions to put their name on a new athletic facility and avoid raising our tuition, we should all give our new President a pat on the back. Finally, if we are to give exclusive beverage rights to anyone, it should be Budweiser (the breakfast of champions!)
