A cabin, deep within the woods of Stockbridge, Ga. is an unusual place to record an album, but then, this has been an unusual year for the pop rock band Collective Soul. The band will be performing to a sold out audience at the Newport Music Hall on Saturday.Collective Soul have been on an emotional roller coaster since 1994 and their first release, “Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid.” The group’s first single “Shine” won the Billboard’s Music Award for “Album Rock Song of the Year.” The band has toured with some of rock’s biggest names, including Aerosmith and Van Halen. They performed for the mud-slinging masses at Woodstock ’94, and have made several appearances on the “Late Show with David Letterman.” Collective Soul’s good fortune ran aground between recording their second and third album. The band underwent a nine-month legal battle with its former manager Bill Richardson.”We were working in a small cabin not by choice,” said Collective Soul singer Ed Roland. “We were in a legal bind that kept us from being able to record in a studio, it was a difficult time for us.”The cabin was originally a place for the band to keep its equipment. “We weren’t thinking any of the songs we recorded at the cabin would be on the record, we were just getting together as a band as therapy,” Roland said. “The songs are very personal and reflect on what we were going through.”Roland has not elaborated on the lawsuit but he said that it has been settled, and that the band has found a new manager, Arthur Spivak. The result of the bands cabin retreat recording is the aptly titled “Disciplined Breakdown” which was released March 11, on Atlantic Records.Collective Soul includes Dean Roland (Ed’s younger brother), on rhythm guitar; Ross Childress on lead guitar; Shane Evans on drums, and Will Turpin on bass.Collective Soul’s roller coaster ride is again on a upward climb. The first single from the new album “Precious Declaration,” has sold over seven million copies worldwide. Roland describes the album as being about “a piece of paper that allows freedom.”Collective Soul will perform Saturday at the Newport Music Hall. The show is sold out.
