Door keys and changed door locks may be a thing of the past for the nearly 400 residents of Drackett Tower.Magnetic security devices have been installed at Drackett Tower, 161 Curl Dr. as part of the Door Pilot Program. The system works like all other Buck I.D. terminals located throughout the Ohio State campus.Twenty-four hours a day, residents at the two residence halls can enter the building by swiping their Buck I.D.s through the device which reads their Social Security numbers.”The card-swipe system works just like the devices used in the dining commons,” said Erica Estep, hall director for Drackett Tower.Any students who live on campus can use their Buck I.D. to get into the building until 7 p.m. The students who live off campus can use the courtesy phone to call their guest down, Estep said. The devices do not eliminate night assistants, but they may cut the number needed, Estep said. Students who lose or forget their Buck I.D. can call the front desk. Estep said a terminal located in the lobby can remove or place individuals into the system in a matter of seconds.Jon Gear, systems manager for university I.D. card and services, said Drackett Tower may have been chosen because it is a highly-used dormitory and the housing administration wanted to see how locking the doors 24 hours a day would work.Gear said there are plans to install the program into more dorms.”Drackett Tower is the only OSU dormitory that has the magnetic security devices,” Gear said. “But, there are plans to install them into more dormitories.” There is also a problem with some residents who let others in, Freeman said.”Tailgating is going to be a problem no matter what,” Gear said. “At times, students just hang around the dorms and wait for someone with an I.D. to come along.””I feel safe with the new security devices.” said Atsuko Nakama, a junior majoring in international studies. “The Door Pilot Program is OK, but there should be certain hours where it’s turned on and off.” It has been a fairly good program considering the location and all the traffic back and forth from Lane Avenue, Estep said.Any malfunctions or unauthorized use of a resident’s Buck I.D. should be reported to the hall director at the time of the incident, Estep said.
