The new dean of the College of Engineering wants the community to know more about the college’s students and their achievements.David Ashley, 46, will assume his role on Saturday after teaching at University of California-Berkeley for eight years. He is currently chairman of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Berkeley.”Within a five-year period we should expect to see greater external recognition of the strengths of the college,” he said. “We should work on increasing exposure through a variety of mechanisms including college publications and public presentations.”Some of his goals at Ohio State include increasing the visibility of the college both on campus and in the engineering community at large. He also plans to improve orientation activities that help incoming students adjust academically. Before teaching at Berkely, he also taught at the University of Texas, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Santa Clara.Ashley is replacing Jose Cruz Jr., current dean and the Howard D. Winbigler Chair in Engineering and Professor of Electrical Engineering. Cruz is leaving because of an OSU rule that requires a president, vice-president, chairperson, or dean to resign the position at age 65. Cruz will remain at OSU as Winbigler Chair, and will perform research with a $75,000 grant from an engineering college alumnus.
