The Columbus Crew is still in search of a permanent home. The latest site being considered is on the grounds of the Ohio Exposition Center. The Expo Center Commission formed a committee to evaluate the proposal by Crew officials for the new stadium. Some concerns the committee wants to address are how the stadium will impact the Expo Center from a financial standpoint, and how the stadium will impact the surrounding community, said Michelle Buemi, spokeswoman for the center. The committee is also concerned about the loss of parking the stadium would create. Parking is important to the center because it hosts more than 200 events each year, including the Ohio State Fair.If built at the center, the stadium would occupy 15 acres of land north of 17th Avenue, and west of Interstate 71, according to a written statement from the center. The land is currently being used as a parking lot.The land is owned by the state of Ohio, and managed by the Expo Center Commission, the governing board of the center, Buemi said. The proposed U-shaped stadium would be built specifically for soccer, and would seat 22,000 people.”The stadium could host other events such as the Major League Soccer Cup, the MLS All Star Game, college football games like the Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship, and maybe even an NFL exhibition game,” said Jamey Rootes, general manager of the Crew. The Crew has to find a new home at the end of this season because of the renovations scheduled to take place at Ohio Stadium. The Expo Center site is the front runner at this time.Buemi feels the site would be ideal.”We have a great location at the Expo Center, easy access, and we are used to dealing with big crowds.” Buemi said.Unlike the failed stadium proposal in Dublin, this stadium would be privately financed by the Crew, Rootes said.Ohio State students are very important to the Crew, Rootes said. One of the main reasons the Crew is so interested in a stadium at the Expo Center is that it “builds on the relationship that we’ve built with the OSU campus community,” Rootes said. The committee will meet again on April 16. The Crew hopes to provide a lease proposal to the full Expo Center Commission, according to a written statement.
