As Columbus waits anxiously for the arrival of U2 at Ohio Stadium, ticket holders are wondering who the opening act will be. Will it be a popular band like Oasis or Rage Against The Machine, who have opened the first several dates of the tour?Or, will it be a band that not many people have even heard of before? The opening act for the U2 show on May 24 is New York City’s, Fun Lovin’ Criminals, a band not many people have even heard of before. The Fun Lovin’ Criminals have used the melting pot of New York City to create an eclectic sound with the rhythms of hip-hop and dance rooted in music’s history of blues and jazz. The band consists of singer and guitarist Huey, drummer and programmer Steve, and the multi-talented Fast, who takes on the roles of bassist, keyboardist, trumpet player and harmonica player for the band. The band formed in 1993 when Huey and Fast, who had been writing together while still in other bands, recruited roommate and drummer Steve to complete the trio, an EMI Records press release said.”We marry the technology of the 1990s with the rudimental inflections found in early blues, jazz, and rock ‘n’ roll,” Huey said. The band was selected to open the show by none other but the members of U2.”When you’re a band of U2’s caliber, you have the decision of who is picked,” said Bob Dickey, the regional promotion/ marketing director for EMI Records. The Fun Lovin’ Criminals have been booked for five dates of the tour, EMI Publicity Director in New York Hillary Siskins said.In addition to Columbus, they are scheduled to play in Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Washington D.C., and Raleigh, she said. From the production to the playing, the F.L.C. have created an original sound using familiarities that most ticket holders can appreciate, but not necessarily classify.”They’re like a square peg and a round hole.” Dickey said. “It’s hard to put them in a certain category.”
