The Ohio State men’s basketball team picks up its first regular season win as it squeaks past the Kent State Golden Flashes 73-67.OSU coach Jim O’Brien was thrilled to get his first victory as a Buckeye.”We have to be exceptionally pleased to have gotten our first win of the season,” O’Brien said. “I don’t think we are in any position right now to take any of these wins for granted.”The Buckeyes were the first to strike, putting the initial four points on the board. Kent took the crowd out of the game by capitalizing on numerous OSU turnovers and taking a ten point lead 11 minutes into the first half. The big surprise of the game was team captain Neshaun Coleman coming off the bench less than five minutes into the game. Coleman had surgery on his ankle Nov. 7 and was not expected to play for another one to three weeks.”I think this kid showed the heart of a lion tonight,” O’Brien said. “He has not been on the court for three weeks. This was his first time taking the ball up and down the floor.” OSU pulled together and rallied back to take a 36-32 halftime lead.”Our guys showed a lot of character by hanging in there and getting themselves back into the game to at least get a lead at half time,” O’Brien said.Ohio State junior guard, Jason Singleton opened the second half with a two foot jump shot in the lane. The second half would prove to be the Jason Singleton and Michael Redd show. Singleton and Redd scored 25 of the Buckeyes 37 second half points.Singleton led all scorers with a career high 23 points and was followed by Redd, who finished with 21. All four of the five OSU starters scored in double figures.Freshman forward, Kyrem Massey, a native of Columbus, led the Golden Flashes with 20 points. However, his effort was not enough to stop the Buckeyes second half surge. The Golden Flashes kept the game close throughout the second half and never let the Buckeyes get more than 13 points ahead. OSU took its biggest lead of the game off a two handed dunk by Singleton over three Kent defenders with 2:21 left in the game. The thirteen point Buckeye lead dwindled down in the remaining two minutes of the game as OSU failed to capitalize from the foul line. OSU missed 19 foul shots, shooting a meager 34 percent.”I’ve never in my life seen free throw shooting like was demonstrated in this game tonight,” O’Brien said. The team will shoot free throws at 7 a.m. this morning to correct the problem, he said.
