The Varsity Club’s parking lot turned into a mud-flying fest Saturday as members of the Greek community spent a chilly afternoon competing in the annual Oozeball tournament for charity.Oozeball, or mud volleyball, has been hosted by the Chi Omega sorority for the past 12 years, said Diane Firlik, an organizer of the event. For the past three years, the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity has co-hosted. “We have 30 fraternities and 30 sororities as well as independent groups and dorms signed up to compete in the mud,” said Ian Hollis, an organizer of the event. Teams entered the tournament for a $45 donation. Fraternities and sororities could send as many teams as they wanted.Firlik said that last year’s tourney raised $7,000 and they hoped to beat that figure this year. The money was raised through entrance fees, t-shirts and sponsorships, and will go to the Ohio Cancer Research Associates. The totals for this year weren’t tallied yet.The men competed on one court and the women on the other. Teams advanced each round and were eliminated after one loss.”This is the first year we have two courts,” said T.J. D’Ambrosio, a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. By the end of the day, the two groups remaining in the mud were the Delta Chi fraternity, who won the men’s competition, and a group of independents who called themselves the “softball team,” that won the women’s competition.”It is so cold, but so worthwhile,” said Bill Walker, a Delta Chi member. “This is so much fun. We are in the mud and giving money to charity.”This is the first year The Varsity Club lent their back lot for the event.”It took us six hours to set up the courts,” D’Ambrosio said.Railroad ties were used to make the courts and truckloads of dirt were then dumped in. Hoses turned the courts into mud baths as teams stood knee deep in the mud trying to keep their balance. In addition to The Varsity Club, sponsors included: Star Bank, BW-3’s, Kinko’s, Discount D.J.’s, Zero In Screen Printing, Loctite Corp. and Steffen Bookbinders, Inc.
